KidsMatter 2 Us – The Benefits Of Early Career Exploration

-

Career exploration has been a significant initiative in most school districts for many years. The benefits to students and families are many. Early career exploration programs can help young people decide on a career pathway before leaving high school, which saves them time and money when going on to college, an apprenticeship or other post-secondary programs.

But early career exploration provides other benefits as well. Students begin with self-reflection, considering their strengths, interests and values. As they become more self-aware and confident, they begin to recognize what is a good fit for them and what isn’t. Early exposure to career options can increase student confidence, leading them to make more informed decisions about what college or university to attend, or what other type of postsecondary program is best for meeting their personal and professional goals. As young people discover their passions, increase their self-awareness, and better understand their options, they feel more energized and excited about the future.

The KidsMatter Springboard Series Summer Program sponsored and developed with key partners (see website) engages high school students in a career field of their interest, providing college credit and career exploration experiences with area employers so that they can see whether a career field is right for them.

For example, a participant in the Springboard Series: Healthcare/Behavioral Health would take a Survey of Healthcare Careers course at College of DuPage and engage in weekly experiences at area organizations and healthcare providers, such as Endeavor Health Edward Hospital and Endeavor Health Linden Oaks Hospital. Students are also trained and certified in Teen Mental Health First Aid. Participants meet professionals, practice pertinent skills, and receive a useful certification, all while learning about healthcare career options.

The Springboard Series currently offers programs in Behavioral Health, Pharmacy Technician, Construction Management and the Trades, and STEM: Life and Physical Sciences.
