Be the One Inspiration

-

During the VFW Fish Fry on April 18, Linda Whaley was recognized for her efforts and dedication to create a new fundraising initiative in support of Be the One.

The Air Force Veteran and member of American Legion Post 43 also provided her story and why it’s important to remember.

“The American Legion initiated the Be The One program for suicide prevention several years ago. The estimated number of Veteran suicides per day was 22 at that time. The program has evolved over the years to include a free 90-minute online training course developed by the American Legion and Columbia University, open to everyone. The number of those who succumb has evolved, also, to a shocking 60-plus individuals a day, with that number growing.

“Several events have taken place, including several Posts organizing marches and walks.

“I participate in Funeral Honor Guard details regularly with the VFW/American Legion. Over the past approximately 18 months, I have participated in details of nine Veterans who committed suicide; one of whom was the nephew of one of my high school friends. I arranged military honors for my cousin’s stepdaughter who succumbed to her personal demons last April. These images stay in my mind and heart. So…I decided to stand up since I could not stand by any longer.

“I approached both the VFW and the American Legion officers here and suggested the ruck march/walk that took place on March 22. We were pleasantly surprised at the overwhelming interest and attendance at this first annual event. The theme, ‘I Will Help Carry the Load,’ was my idea to send a message that everyone participating in this event in any way is willing to help carry the heavy burden many of our Veterans and active duty personnel carry.

“All who are members of this Post, especially those who put a lot of work into making this happen, and those individuals who participated as caring citizens, all chose to do something. We Veterans chose to stand up, just as we did the day we took our oath as enlisted and officers.”

PN Ombudsman
An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
