Above / PN never chases police sirens to photograph traffic accidents, but all too often crashes suddenly appear, night and day, whenever out and about in Naperville. Pay attention, drive carefully, watch out for the other guy, stay safe. (PN File Photo)
Update, 12:35PM April 23, 2025 / Thanks, Chief Jason Arres, TED Manager Andy Hynes and Sergeant Derek Zook, for the 30-minute presentation with commonsense reminders to follow the Rules of the Road.
Traffic Hotline for residents to report unsafe driving behavior neighborhood by neighborhood is (630) 305-5379.
Drive the posted speed limit or less according to road/weather conditions. Drive responsibly. Be patient. Use turn signals to merge successfully.
Use the “3-second rule” when following behind a vehicle. Be prepared to reduce speed.
Distractions such as cell phones, “mini” TV-type devices on the dashboard, radios and passengers can create crashes. Pay attention to safe driving.
When preparing to turn left, stay behind stop bar at the intersection to avoid T-bones. Be sure all lanes are stopped before turning left.
Thanks for reading! Buckle up and drive safely.
As Chief Arres said, “Traffic and road safety is all of our jobs.”
During the webinar, Chief Arres noted the next “Chat with the Chief” is set for May 1, 2025.

Chat with the Chief from 9 to 10:30AM at Honey Jam Café
Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres invites the community to chat with him and other members of the Naperville Police Department on Thursday, May 1. This informal meet-and-greet is part of the Naperville Police Department’s Chat with the Chief series. It will be held from 9 to 10:30AM on May 1 at Honey Jam Café, 1504 N. Naper Blvd. in Naperville.
At Chat with the Chief, attendees should not expect a presentation or formal agenda, but rather informal conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. Residents are encouraged to stop by at any time during the event.
“Chat with the Chief is such a valuable event because we get to have one-on-one and small group conversations with residents,” said Chief Arres. “We can answer their questions, listen to their concerns, and really get to know the values and priorities of the people who live and work in the town we’re sworn to protect.”
Chat with the Chief is typically hosted several times each year in various locations throughout the city. For more information about Chat with the Chief, visit www.naperville.il.us/npd/chatwithchief. Any business owner or manager interested in hosting a future Chat with the Chief at their Naperville location is encouraged to email npdpio@naperville.il.us.
City of Naperville Report
The Naperville Police Department is hosting a traffic safety webinar at noon on Wed., April 23, to educate citizens about the most common causes of crashes in Naperville, how the City works to improve traffic safety, and how motorists can help make our roadways safer.

The Naperville Police Department responded to more than 3,200 crashes in 2024. Nearly 500 of those involved injuries and eight resulted in fatalities. Police Chief Jason Arres, Traffic Unit Sergeant Derek Zook, and Engineering Manager Andy Hynes from the City’s Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) Department will present data on the frequency, locations, and most common causes of crashes in Naperville. They will also explain the Police and TED departments’ processes for evaluating roadway and driving complaints and how the city uses a combination of education, engineering and enforcement in an effort to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.
Free Webinar is set to begin at noon Wed., April 23
The webinar will begin at noon on Wed., April 23. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. A link to the webinar is available at www.naperville.il.us/NPDCommunityEducation or by clicking here. Residents who do not have the Zoom application downloaded on their device will be able to view the webinar using their internet browser by clicking the “Join from your browser” option.
A recording of the webinar will be made available on the City’s website after-the-fact for those individuals who are not able to attend but are interested in learning more about this critical topic.
“Traffic safety is a partnership. Our officers are out there enforcing traffic laws, but residents have to realize that there are hundreds of miles of roadway in Naperville and traffic safety cannot be achieved through enforcement alone,” Arres said. “I’m hopeful that the information we present in this webinar will be eye-opening to residents and encourage more people to partner with us to make our roads safer.”
