Sharing and Caring – How To Donate What You No Longer Need

-

This month I’m excited to introduce this new column. A few months ago I contacted Positively Naperville with a bunch of questions about its faithful coverage. I mentioned my kids call me a “researcher.” One thing led to another, including the history of Sharing Connections, a nonprofit now in Downers Grove that accepts donations of used in-good-condition furniture, household items and more.

Long story short, Positively Naperville asked if I’d like to write about ways to give back what we no longer want or need. I hope you will find it interesting, helpful and motivating.

The purpose is to provide information about ways that we can share what we have, where to donate items we longer need and where to volunteer in our community.

Naperville has always been a community that cares. People here are generous with their time, talent and their treasures. The Bible says in Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I hope you will walk with me on this journey we call life and discover new ways to show we care and share what we have with others. Although I have lived in Naperville for over 30 years, there is still much I can learn and discover. Therefore, I would like to ask you to share with me your ideas or questions. If you have a unique story of items you have given to share with others in need or have questions about where to donate items you no longer need, please contact me.

If you are active in a nonprofit organization that has needs for specific items to be donated or you need volunteers, please let me know.

Many of us started off the year with goals for decluttering and purging. And it’s already time for thoughts of spring cleaning. In the coming months, I look forward to sharing ideas and stories with you on how to make that task easier.

Now that it’s April, three months into 2025 and a quarter century into the new millennium, let’s all decide how we will make an impact by sharing and caring every day.  Our community will be stronger for it.
