Happy Easter! Some of my favorite Easter memories are centered on the hunt for Easter eggs and Easter baskets. When we were first married, I hid a basket for my husband, Terry, and he said he was not going to go looking for it. He changed his mind when I told him there was a bottle of scotch in the basket. So much of life is about motivation.
When our children were younger, the Easter Bunny brought colored hard-boiled eggs and plastic eggs filled with treats. Unfortunately, when our boys knew that all the plastic eggs had been found and that only hard-boiled eggs were still hidden, they stopped looking for the eggs. Soon the Easter Bunny started hiding only plastic eggs. Then the competition began. Who could find the most eggs? Eventually, I learned to keep egg cartons and when one of them found a dozen, they could help their brothers find their dozen. No more fighting over who found the most.
For the week before Easter our boys would hide empty plastic eggs on each other so they could “practice” for Easter morning. I don’t know if they would want to admit that even as teens they would hunt for plastic eggs on Easter morning. By that time there was always money in the eggs. Again, so much of life is about motivation.
The Easter Bunny also sent Easter boxes to my sons when they were on deployment. I recently saw an ad that was to determine whether a little girl preferred a Reese’s peanut butter egg or a Cadbury egg. She chose both. But I can tell you that the Reese’s egg can hold its shape as it travels to a ship on the Persian Gulf. The Cadbury egg tends to melt and looks more like a fried egg than a hard-boiled egg. But its deformed shape did not detract from its wonderful, sweet taste.
I wish all of you a Happy Easter and a basket filled with your favorite treats.
