Engaging Aging – New Dementia Caregiver Support Group in Naperville

-

Caregiving for a loved one with dementia is an unknown territory for many people with no road map of what is ahead. Caregivers often feel isolated and overwhelmed which can lead to stress and burnout. Joining a support group can have huge benefits to the caregiver and Naperville has one such group.

The new dementia caregiver support group, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association and conducted by trained facilitators, was established from an identified need in Naperville to offer a safe and supportive environment where caregivers can come together with others who face similar challenges.

Lisa Kirchner, the lead facilitator, indicated that the group is very informal. It is a time carved out for caregivers to share and support each other, where they are welcomed to speak as much or as little as they choose. The caregivers choose what is discussed and the group is confidential.

Caregiver support groups are critical for overall mental health and overall well-being because they are supportive environments where caregivers can share experiences, seek advice, and connect with others. Participants can talk through issues such as how to cope and they can learn from each other about strategies that might work for them.

Sharing feelings helps the caregiver feel that they are not alone and, according to Kirchner, participants have said, “It is comforting to know that there are other people in their same situation.”

Community resources also are shared during the sessions.

The group is free and meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 1-2PM at the Naperville Public Library (95th Street). For more information, or to register, please send an email toDementiaFriendlyNaperville+info@gmail.com.

Carpe Diem!
