North Central College Professor

-

Guy Eugene Oliver Sr. was born on the family farm, January 22, 1884, in Minnesota City, Winona County, Minnesota, the son of Lynds Jones Oliver and Ella Arminda Sumner.

Guy received his B.A. degree at Hamline University in 1909, where he was editor of the school newspaper, and his M.A. degree from Northwestern University. He also did graduate work at Leland Powers School of the Spoken Word in Boston, Massachusetts.
Guy taught school in St. Paul, MN, before moving to Naperville.

Guy married Ruth Louise Perry June 26, 1915, in Lanesboro, Fillmore County, Minnesota, and they were the parents of three children, Guy Eugene Jr., Donald Earle, and Jean Maxine, who married Dr. Harold Walter Henning, Jr.

In the fall of 1916, he came to Naperville from Hill School, a private school in Boston, and was Professor of Public Speaking at North Central College for 36 years from 1916 to 1951.
Guy is credited with starting the school’s speech team, drama department and radio station.

At the time, there were only two other colleges in the State with a speech department and he was considered the “dean of speech.”

Guy was a member of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church of Naperville.

In 1946, he was elected as President of the Rotary Club of Naperville.

Guy also was raised a Master Mason in Euclid Lodge August 11, 1946, and served as Master of the Lodge in 1956. He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Euclid Chapter No. 13 on October 22, 1946, and served as Excellent High Priest in 1949.

In addition, Guy was a member of the Aurora Commandery No. 22, Aurora White Shrine, Maywood Council, and the Chicago Consistory of the Scottish Rite.

Guy Eugene Oliver Sr. died August 24, 1959, in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois. Dr. Paul Washburn officiated at the memorial service at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church and Guy was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
