Thriving With WDSRA: Erin’s Story

-

What is special recreation? I love when people ask me that question. Before answering, I take a moment to gauge if they want the long or short version. Honestly, the long version can go on for quite a while. For you though, I’ll give you the short version – followed by the more powerful one.

The short version is that special recreation, through the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), serves as a lifeline for individuals with special needs. Through social and recreational programs, children, teens, and adults have opportunities to be a part of a sports team, engage in meaningful day programs, dance with friends, take trips without their parents, and so much more.

The powerful version? Simply put – special recreation transforms lives!

To truly understand this, you only need to meet one of our participants and hear just how special recreation has made a profound impact on their life.

Meet Erin!

Erin Feeney, at 33, exemplifies resilience and achievement despite living with cerebral palsy. Her intelligence, humor, and positive attitude shine through her vibrant personality. Erin is not only a college student but also an accomplished author and a credited Disney writer.

Erin’s journey with WDSRA began eight years ago, following the passing of her mother. Seeking a supportive environment and a sense of purpose, she found exactly that in WDSRA. Joining a WDSRA social club became a transformative experience for her.

Today, WDSRA is an integral part of Erin’s life. She actively participates in special events, dances, social clubs, trips, and more. Through these activities, Erin finds joy, connection and a sense of belonging.

“After that very first social club program, Erin was screaming with delight. I knew WDSRA was good for her! That was rare but it felt really good.” – Kevin, Erin’s dad

WDSRA provides Erin with the stimulation and social connections she values. The dedicated staff understand her physical needs, communicate easily with her, and appreciate her sense of humor – ensuring she feels supported and celebrated every step of the way.

I invite you to listen to Erin’s full story. You’ll hear from her father Kevin and directly from Erin herself. Watch the video at the top.
