October 2024 Turning Pointe Report
by Julie Schmidt
Welcome, October. The leaves are changing, the temperature has a slight chill, and the aroma of pumpkin spice is in the air. At Turning Pointe, our Adult Day students have also been feeling the energy of the autumn season. Each year, they are tasked with assembling more than 600 Pumpkin Race Kits for our local community and for distribution across the U.S.
Each specialty kit not only offers a fun racing experience for the purchaser, but also provides valuable job skills for our participants in the year-round employment program. During their time on the job, life skills including following procedures, inventory management and managing shipping processes are mastered. These employees are paid for their meticulous hard work. Kits are available for purchase online, and can be picked up or shipped to you—perfect for hosting your own race or joining us at the Naperville Pumpkin Race from noon to 3PM on October 26, at Rotary Hill.
What is the Pumpkin Race? It is a hilarious and suspenseful side-by-side race where decorated pumpkins will go head-to-head for the coveted Pumpkin Race Championship Trophy. Friends of all ages and abilities are invited to create their own unique Pumpkin Racers for an afternoon of fun, creativity, and competition. Races are hosted throughout the afternoon for community participants, along with specialty heats for business partners and Turning Pointe students. Each classroom at Turning Pointe has the opportunity to get involved and decorate a Pumpkin to compete in the race.
Attendees can expect a festive atmosphere with a food truck, various vendors, crafts, treats, and the fan-favorite bubble guy. All ages are welcome and encouraged to come dressed in your favorite costume and ready to cheer for your favorite Pumpkin Racer. Prizes for Best Decorated Pumpkin and Best Costume are awarded. Join us for a lively afternoon of pumpkin-focused fun at the 8th annual Naperville Pumpkin Race.
