2024 mid-year crime and incident data

Naperville Police Department Report

The Naperville Police Department recognizes that awareness is a key factor in the overall safety of a community. Residents who are aware of the types of crimes happening in their city are more likely to practice situational awareness, report suspicious activity to police, and take proactive steps to avoid victimization. For that reason, the Naperville Police Department presents the following overview of crime and incident data reported between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2024.

Crimes Against Persons

Crimes against persons made up approximately one-quarter of the total crimes reported in Naperville in the first half of 2024. The vast majority (approximately 92%) of the reported crimes against persons fell into the categories of intimidation and simple assault. Simple assault includes altercations and incidents (including domestics) that don’t involve weapons or serious injuries.

Here are a few take-aways from the 2024 mid-year statistics:

  • The total number of crimes against persons are similar to last year with slight increases noted in several categories, including criminal sexual assault and simple assault.
  • 20 criminal sexual assaults were reported to police in the first half of 2024. While it does not minimize the seriousness of this crime, we feel it is important for the community to know that in the majority (18) of these cases, the victims knew or were somehow acquainted with the offender.
  • Domestic batteries make up approximately 66% of all simple assaults reported to NPD.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, please know that help is available. Call NPD’s Victim Advocate Gianna Trombino at (630) 305-5488 or visit www.naperville.il.us/DomesticViolence.

Crimes Against Property

The majority (approximately 63%) of Naperville’s reported crime in the first half of 2024 is classified as property crimes, most of which are theft, fraud (which includes identity theft), and vandalism. Here are a few take-aways from the 2024 mid-year statistics:

  • Fewer property crimes were reported in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
  • Financial crimes make up about 20% of all property crimes reported.
  • 75% of burglaries to vehicles reported in the first half of 2024 involved unlocked vehicles
  • More than 50% of burglaries to residences and businesses involved unlocked structures.
  • In the first half of 2024, 55 attempted or completed vehicle thefts were reported, which is significantly higher than the 24 reported during the same period last year. Many of these are believed to be tied to a string of Hyundai and Kia thefts resulting from certain theft methods being popularized on social media. Both Hyundai and Kia have offered anti-theft software upgrades and other programs to combat the trend.

As we enter the second half of 2024, we ask that residents continue to practice situational awareness and report suspicious activity or concerning behavior to our department. As the saying goes, if you “See Something, Say Something.”

Additionally, we ask that residents continue to follow the recommendations of our “Lock It or Lose It” campaign – keep valuables out of plain sight and lock your homes and vehicles. That community partnership, along with NPD’s proactive efforts, will keep Naperville one of the safest cities of its size in America.
