Loaves & Fishes: Take action and tackle hunger

-

As September begins, we observe Hunger Action Month, an initiative by Feeding America to mobilize communities nationwide to tackle hunger. This month reminds us that food insecurity is not just a distant issue—it’s happening in our neighborhoods.

Hunger often goes unseen. Many families in our community are struggling to provide healthy, nutritious meals for their loved ones, even though they may not visibly show signs of financial hardship. Unfortunately, many of these hardworking households earn just above the threshold to qualify for federal nutrition programs like SNAP, WIC, or school meals, forcing them to rely on food pantries for additional support.

It’s easy to think hunger only affects those in severe poverty, but the reality is more complex. Rising living costs—housing, groceries, gas, and more—have made it harder for families to manage. Even those who once felt secure now face food insecurity. Over the past year, Loaves & Fishes Community Services has seen a record number of visitors, challenging us to reach new heights to keep up with food demand.

Hunger affects a wide range of people and often defies stereotypes. Job loss, medical emergencies, or unexpected life events can push anyone into a situation where they can’t afford enough food. From single parents juggling jobs to college students skipping meals for textbooks, and elderly individuals on fixed incomes who can’t afford proper nutrition, hunger impacts all ages and walks of life.

Raising awareness is the first step toward action. Here’s how you can help:

Volunteer: Your time is crucial in the fight against hunger. Sorting food, packing boxes, or distributing supplies makes a big difference.

Donate food: Non-perishable, healthy food donations are always needed. If you can’t donate in person, consider our Virtual Food Drive through our website.

Contribute funds: Monetary donations, no matter the size, support initiatives that help families in need.

This Hunger Action Month let’s unite to ensure no one in our community worries about their next meal.
