12 Fire Safety tips will help fireproof your home inside and out during the holiday season.
- Check Holiday Lights: Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires or other damage before use to prevent electrical fires.
- Water Fresh Trees: If you have a live Christmas tree, water it regularly to prevent it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
- Use Flameless Candles: Flameless battery-operated candles give you that festive glow without the risks of traditional candles.
- Practice Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading electrical outlets. Use surge protectors for added safety.
- Turn Off Lights: Turn off holiday lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
- Monitor Cooking: Don’t get distracted while cooking or baking. Keep flammable materials away from stovetops.
- Test Smoke Alarms: Regularly test and replace batteries in smoke alarms.
- Have an Emergency Plan: Make sure all family members are aware of the home’s evacuation plan in case of a fire. Designate a meeting place outside.
- Be Mindful of Space Heaters: Keep them at least three feet away from flammable materials and turn them off when not in use.
- Properly Dispose of Wrapping Paper: Don’t burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. It ignites quickly and can cause a chimney fire.
- Inspect Chimneys: Before using your fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned to remove any potential fire hazards.
- Fire Extinguisher: Make sure your fire extinguisher is easily accessible and everyone in the home knows where it is and how to use it.
