The following is a joint news release from the Naperville Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office that was first released to the public by the county on Nov. 24
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced today that Judge Anthony Coco granted the State’s motion to deny pre-trial release for two Naperville men accused of beating a man outside a Naperville apartment complex and then breaking into an apartment at the complex. Daggio Castillo, 22 (d.o.b. 7/20/2001) of the 2500 block of Oneida Lane and Jeremy Gundlach, 21 (d.o.b. 1/31/2002) of the 100 block of Testa Drive, each appeared at First Appearance Court this morning charged with one count of Home Invasion (Class X Felony) and one count of Aggravated Battery (Class 3 Felony).
On November 23, 2023, at approximately 1AM, officers with the Naperville Police Department responded to an apartment complex located in the 1500 block of West Jefferson Avenue for a call of a potential home invasion.
Following an investigation, it is alleged that Castillo and Gundlach traveled from Maywood to the Naperville apartment complex to confront an individual they had been communicating with earlier in the evening. It is alleged that upon their arrival, the men encountered an individual outside the complex and a physical altercation ensued during which the victim sustained a broken nose as well as fractures to other bones in his face.
It is further alleged that the men then broke into one of the apartment units by kicking down the door and that once inside, the pair made verbal threats to the occupant before fleeing the scene. Both men were taken into custody at the scene. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention. He is expected to require surgery as a result of the battery.
“The type of senseless, violent attack that sent an innocent man to the hospital with serious facial injuries, as alleged in this case, has no place in civilized society and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “The victim in this case has a long road to recovery ahead of him and I wish him well as he recovers both physically and emotionally. I thank the Naperville Police Department for their prompt response and apprehension of the defendants in this case. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Michael Paup and Michael McBride for their efforts in securing charges against Mr. Castillo and Mr. Gundlach.”
“Violent acts like this have no place in our city, or any city for that matter,” said Chief Arres. “I am thankful for the excellent teamwork displayed by a number of our different units working together to catch these suspects and hold them accountable. I would also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his assistants who worked with us on this investigation.”
The next court appearance for both men is scheduled for December 18, 2023, for arraignment in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
