Loaves & Fishes: Summer gardens can combat food insecurity

-

As we embrace the warmth of the summer season, many of us spend time in our gardens, enjoying the harvest, sharing with family and friends, or pickling and preserving. Gardening has experienced a resurgence in recent years, with an increasing number of individuals cultivating their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This summer pastime also provides an opportunity to help families struggling to keep food on their table by donating homegrown produce. Not only does this provide access to fresh, healthy food, but it also promotes self-sustainability, environmental awareness, and a strong sense of community spirit.

The need for food for families in our community has grown dramatically due largely to the high cost of groceries. People are struggling to provide healthy food to their families because it is so expensive. Additionally, our food supply has been unable to keep up with the rapidly increasing need. While the demand for food has never been higher, food donations have decreased.

Donating surplus produce can support families and individuals with limited access to nutritious food options. Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential for a balanced and nourishing diet. Your contributions from the garden can significantly enhance the quality of meals for our neighbors in need.

Community gardens are also playing a vital role in addressing the issue of hunger. If you don’t have a garden of your own, joining a local community garden can provide an opportunity to contribute to the cause and make a difference.

Every contribution counts whether you have a small garden or a sprawling plot. Consider donating the fruits of your labor to Loaves & Fishes. Together, we can nurture both our gardens and the well-being of our communities.
