At its February 9, 2023, meeting, the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners approved the name, “Rothermel Family Skate Facility” for the forthcoming skate facility renovations planned for Centennial Park. The name is in recognition of a $120,000 grant given to the Naperville Park District for the renovation project through the Rothermel Family Fund of DuPage Foundation.

The Park Board approved the naming by resolution after a 60-day consideration period required by the board’s policies, which began on December 8, 2022.

The original skate facility at Centennial Park was constructed in 2004 just west of Centennial Beach. Updates to the facility are needed due to heavy use and the resulting wear and tear.

In 2022, the Naperville Park District conducted a survey and hosted an on-site meeting for interested skaters and members of the community to help guide the design. The input from many participants enabled the Park District and the design firm to prepare a concept for the renovation that reflects the ideas and comments shared by those who participated in the outreach in 2022. The renovation project is planned for 2023.

“We are grateful for this grant that will support the renovation of a popular skating destination,” said Executive Director Brad Wilson. “The Rothermel Family Skate Facility will provide a revitalized place for skaters of all ages to enjoy the challenge and fun of this sport.”
