American Legion presents 2022 Citizen of the Year

-

Recognizing that Steve Strickland spends the majority of his time helping others, the Naperville American Legion Post 43 has selected the honorable Veteran as its 2022 Citizen of the Year. The active member of American Legion Post 43 also has been director of the American Legion Riders Chapter 43 for several years.

Since early 2021, Strickland has been instrumental in raising money to support Gold Star Families by selling “Remember Everyone Deployed” R.E.D. T-shirts ($20 each), taking the time to organize and attend whatever venue will help support the cause. To date, The American Legion Riders have raised more than $12,000 to support the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument that will be located in Veterans Park.

In addition, Strickland and the Legion Riders support the Honor Flight Chicago programs to Washington, D.C. for Veterans who served in the military from World War II through the Vietnam era. Joined by other Legion members, the Riders also greet the Veterans upon their return to the airport, always letting them know how much their service is appreciated.

In addition to his work with the American Legion, Strickland currently drives a bus with the Sunrise Transportation service. Driving students with special needs to and from school is where his compassionate personality, patience and commitment to helping anyone in need are truly recognized.

What’s more, Strickland is a member of the PAWSitive Therapy Troupe, an all-volunteer public charity, dedicated to sharing registered therapy dogs with individuals in a wide variety of health care and educational settings.

The American Legion Post 43 and its American Legion Riders Chapter are grateful for all the ways Steve Strickland provides comfort, encouragement and support, always freely giving his time. Members also enjoy his camaraderie and are inspired by his dedication, whatever the cause might be.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
