Dan Shanower Memorial and followed at other locations. After the parade at 12:15PM, a 30-minute Memorial Day observance will be held in Central Park. (PN File Photos)

“For 2022, Memorial Day, Mon., May 30, actually falls on the date originally set to honor the fallen,” noted parade committee member Ron Keller who has participated in the Naperville parade for more than 75 years. Keller also is aware that in 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, establishing the 3-day weekend when Memorial Day would be commemorated on the last Monday of May.

Strike up the Naperville Municipal Band!

These days, Keller, conductor of the Naperville Municipal Band since 1966, also assists in contacting middle school and high school bands to participate in the city’s longest-running annual parade. The deadline to register entries is May 1, 2022.

“We haven’t done one on this scale since 2019,” said Parade Chairman Tom Parker. “We’re hoping to welcome a great turnout of participants as well as families and friends who want to honor all who sacrificed.”

Line-up organizer Emily Binder recently launched the 2022 Memorial Day Parade website, now accepting requests from Veterans’ organizations to participate.

To accommodate veterans groups, marching bands and other patriotic entries, the website will accept parade registration with complete instructions, providing parade participants with pertinent information regarding the focus on veterans and military families that have given the supreme sacrifice for our nation.

The Naperville Memorial Day Parade will not feature businesses, political candidates or political promotions.

Gold Star families and Veterans riding in vintage vehicles as well as scout troops and marching bands will be among entries as it winds through downtown Naperville toward Central Park, just south of Benton Avenue.

ALERT! ALERT! Scout troops of all ages are welcome to help pay tribute by carrying commemorative banners. Visit the Naperville Memorial Day Parade website to find all the details to register.

Under Parker’s leadership the parade committee is comprised of members of the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, American Legion Post 43, the Naperville Municipal Band, Naperville Police and Fire Departments as well as vintage car owners and other community volunteers.

The Naperville tradition attracts tens of thousands to downtown Naperville to pay tribute to every military man, woman and family that has sacrificed for our nation’s freedom.

Thanks for supporting Buddy Poppy distribution. During the week prior to Memorial Day, Buddy Poppies are available outside local supermarkets.

Parents are reminded to tell youngsters that the Memorial Day Parade is the one without candy and hand-outs. Dress in patriotic colors, wear a red artificial Buddy Poppy and be prepared to stand, hats off, when families of the military and veterans march by parade spectators.

Poppies will be distributed from local supermarkets.

Meanwhile, Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:30AM Mon., May 30 / Save the date!

Scouts are welcome to help pay tribute that “Freedom isn’t free” by carrying commemorative banners. Visit the Naperville Memorial Day Parade website to find all the details to register.

As is tradition, beginning at 10:30AM Mon., May 30, the 2022 Naperville Memorial Day Parade officially steps off from Jackson and West St., heads east to Washington, north to Benton, and east to Ss. Peter and Paul parking lot.

A brief observance is held along Jackson Avenue near the Veterans Plaza along the Riverwalk. Then the parade advances, making its way toward Central Park.

Immediately following the parade, participants and the community are welcome to attend the 30-minute observance with brief speeches, patriotic music performed by the Naperville Municipal Band and other musical groups, and wreath-laying that follows in Central Park.

Watch for details in May with the complete schedule for the 2022 Naperville Memorial Day remembrances. For now, organizations with ties to Veterans are welcome to register at www.napervillememorialdayparade.com. The deadline to register for the parade is May 1, 2022.
