Take time to appreciate the heart and culture of Naperville

-

Discover Naperville’s rich history from 1831 to yesterday. Enjoy the great outdoors!

Readers might jest that we’re going out on a limb. For the second month in a row, our cover will use letters lurking in the treetops to help tell our story. The preponderance of 24-hour news can take you in a gazillion directions, distracting you all the way. Yet when searching the crown and branches of a tree for letters of the alphabet, you have to concentrate.

That’s why we try to unplug and take a long walk every day into our parks, forest preserves or along the Riverwalk, natural treasures of our community where we allow fresh air and freedom to work wonders.

Taking photos of trees also led us to the sled hill and playground at May Watts Park where the joyful noises of families playing outdoors in the snow reminded us how lucky we are to have such a recreational setting in our neighborhood.

In this electronic world of counting friends, the park bench at May Watts Elementary School displays memorable words from Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) about being a friend.

“The only way to have a friend is to be one,” wrote Emerson. And we’re reminded of Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance” that suggests for all individuals to trust their own instincts and follow their ideas from one day to the next with freedom to choose.

From Groundhog Day to Super Bowl Sunday to Valentine’s Day to Presidents Day to Black History Month to American Heart Health Month, choose to fall in love with good things happening in February, mindful that spring begins again on March 20.

Let us extend heartfelt thanks for reading PN in print and online. We think our “Search” tool at www.positivelynaperville.com is truly handy and that our photo galleries tell stories with colorful pictures worth thousands and thousands of words.

A number of years ago, a local Realtor sent a potential homebuyer from Connecticut to PN’s website. An email arrived from the sender that said, “My Realtor suggested that I take a peek of Naperville as featured on your website. I expected to spend a few minutes. I ended up spending most of the afternoon.”

PN Ombudsman
An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
