Loaves & Fishes: Next Generation Generosity

As we look to the future, we are so encouraged by the involvement of the youngest generation in our vital mission. This year we had numerous children and teenagers step up to end hunger and transform lives. While we remain deeply grateful for everyone who makes our work possible, we’re especially touched by the young people who want to help. Here are a few examples of their generosity.

Several children invited friends and family to collect food for struggling families in lieu of birthday presents. We are also pleased that many students regularly volunteer for Loaves & Fishes after school. Earlier this spring, 9-year-old Sarra wanted to do something nice for people that would also raise money for those in need. She created special “bunny boxes” full of springtime treats and sold them to friends and family. She significantly exceeded her goal and gave all the proceeds to Loaves & Fishes. This summer a beloved volunteer, Jenny Matthews, sadly passed away. A group of young students who adored her held a lemonade stand so they could donate to Loaves & Fishes in her honor. They proudly and respectfully brought their hard-earned dollars in to the pantry. Jenny’s legacy lives on in these young people and their devotion to food insecurity.

Recently, Waubonsie Valley High School football player Owen put an entire campaign together to raise funds for Loaves & Fishes. He invited people to give amounts that related to his football statistics. The campaign “Tackle Hunger” resonated with many people and the result makes an incredible difference in the lives of our families in need. He raised awareness about food insecurity in our community, too.

What a joy to see the wonder and amazement within these extraordinary young people when they realize what a difference they are making in the lives of others. Their selfless actions inspire us all and give us every confidence the future will be full of kindness and compassion.
