WDSRA: Generosity from the heart

-

I spend a lot … a lot … of time thinking about generosity. I think about it, write about it and talk about it. Some would say I obsess over the generosity of the people who support our participants and families. But honestly, it is really because I am continually humbled by the selfless giving of so many.

Sometimes it’s the thoughtfulness of a parent. For instance, at the end of summer camp one parent took it upon themselves to decorate water bottles for each of our camp staff. Inside each bottle was a gift card. What a lovely token of thanks! It was certainly appreciated by all who received it.

Then there is the pair of extraordinary volunteers who take it upon themselves to make birthdays just that much more special. They join the WDSRA Birthday Bus visits every month. The Birthday Bus celebrates a participant birthday with a special visit by staff and volunteers, a cupcake, balloons, and a song. You can imagine the popularity this program.

These volunteers are making it even more special by adding their own goody bag for each birthday participant. Goody bags are always in a reusable container, like a backpack or drawstring bag, and inside may be anything from glow- in-the-dark bracelets to fall-themed socks to candy & treats. What a wonderful addition to the celebration.

There are also some incredible business owners whose willingness to donate have a big impact on what we can offer within our programs throughout the year. Studio Movie Grill has been a tremendous supporter since opening their doors. With the tickets they donate, WDSRA social clubs get the opportunity to see first run movies with friends and our Rec & Roll adult day program participants get to enjoy a regular movie day. In addition, Studio Movie Grill offers special needs screenings of first run movies to families community wide. We truly appreciate partners like Studio Movie Grill.

Most recently, Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, Pinot’s Palette and the Naperville Park District have already made a donation to our signature event The Bash. The Bash is our largest fundraiser of the year taking place March 5, 2022. We are already reaching out to local businesses asking for their support… and yes, generosity… to create an outstanding silent auction at The Bash. Proceeds from the silent auction go directly to support WDSRA participants and families.

If you or your organization would like to support WDSRA participants and families, please contact us. We welcome the opportunity to share with you how your generosity can positively impact the people living in your community.

And thank you for your generosity!
