Art Talk – Are we there yet?

-

Month three of Restore Illinois’ final phase finds us prepared to embark on unchartered territory as we emerge from the pandemic . . . while we are still in the pandemic. Business at restaurants and retail shops picked up momentum, giving members of the arts sector the motivation to test the waters. Outdoor events happening throughout the community are attracting those who are eager to escape the virtual world. Crowds gathering at Naper Settlement, Central Park, and various other outdoor venues are ready to experience in-person concerts, movies, and plays hosted by local favorites like Brightside Theatre, Naperville Municipal Band, and Summer Place Theatre. These activities are revitalizing the region and giving arts groups a chance to reconnect with their audiences.

But what about indoor experiences? Movie theaters witnessed an increase in attendance since reopening months ago when new releases were at a low point. Confidence levels continue to rise as product becomes more available. Mid-July saw the shattering of the pandemic box office record with the release of “Black Widow,” a film grossing $80 million in its opening weekend. One week later, the After Hours Film Society made its announcement: “We’re back and ready for our first post-shutdown program on August 16 at the Tivoli Theatre!”

Up first on the marquee is Edgar Wright’s debut documentary, “The Sparks Brothers,” a loving, lighthearted tribute to two brothers who have made “some of the best music you’ve probably never heard.” Rated 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the film takes viewers “on a musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks: your favorite band’s favorite band.” Organizers of the 32-year old not-for-profit felt this lively, quirky, and upbeat film would be a joyful welcoming for new and returning cinephiles ready to embrace the big screen.

For those of you who are still on the fence about attending indoor activities, please consider this: to ensure the safety of its guests, Classic Cinemas continues to follow the latest CDC and government recommendations including improved air quality, vigilant sanitation, and employee health screening. Tivoli Theatre’s 1,000 seat auditorium allows for plenty of socially distancing and will be ready to welcome you when you are comfortable.

About the After Hours Film Society: The After Hours Film Society typically meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month to view foreign, art, and independent films generally not shown at suburban theaters. A discussion led by a film professional or educator follows each screening. After Hours sponsored refreshments, a program staple, have been temporarily suspended as a safety measure.
