Fire Prevention 24-7 – #NapervilleProud

-

I often tell residents not to think about ‘if’ severe weather is going to happen, rather they need to prepare for ‘when’ it happens.

As we all know, a tornado hit Naperville recently. There were over 200 reports of property damage, 19 uninhabitable houses, and five residents were transported for injuries.

This was a devastating event for sure, but it could have been a lot worse. Residents took quick action, and heeded the warning of the sirens and their weather apps. What some affected residents told us later, was that when their weather app alerted them, it was less than 30 seconds before the tornado hit. So, my take-away from that is, watch the alerts on your TV and/or phones. If the weather is severe, head down to the basement, or to an interior room in the event the alert progresses to a warning.

Let’s just recap the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch is basically saying: Be prepared! Tornadoes are possible in the area. Make sure you have an emergency plan and supplies.

Another takeaway from the recent tornado is to be sure you have your insurance card/contact info accessible.

Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued. A warning is saying: Take action!
We get a lot of calls from residents saying that they couldn’t hear the sirens. Remember, the sirens are an outdoor alerting system. They are telling people outside, that they need to get inside. If you can hear them from inside your house, then that is just a bonus! That’s why we encourage NOAA weather radios and/or the apps on your phone.

When alerts sound, move to an interior room on the lowest floor. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

It was so amazing to see how, in the wake of such a devastating event, neighbors, residents and strangers came together to help each other in a time of great need.

The takeaway for me is that Naperville and its residents have each other’s backs. What an incredible community to be a part of! Your Naperville Fire Department sees you, and is here for you always. #NapervilleProud
