Summer sunshine is what we need

-

Above-Below / Here’s hoping for a banner year for the Naperville Park District recreational facility that promotes “Summer’s back at Centennial Beach!” Find historic Centennial Beach, created in 1931 to commemorate Naperville’s first 100 years, just west of downtown Naperville.

For most of 2021, PN has referenced a stone monument along the Riverwalk engraved with a poem titled “What We Need.” The stone is located along the brick path just beyond the old Netzley House, now the Visitors Center for the Moser Tower, west of the footbridge that leads over the DuPage River toward Centennial Beach.

The eight lines of this poem are from a 22-line poem titled “A Little More and A Little Less,” written a little more than 100 years ago by Stephen Abbott Northrup from Kansas City, Kansas.

Encourage family, friends and youngsters to visit the stone, engraved with reminders that what we need are a little more kindness with more smiles, laughter and flowers along the pathway of life.

Every seasonal change brings new adventures outdoors. Longer days as summer approaches offer more time to appreciate all that’s created in nature and to discover attractions that welcome visitors just about every day.

Considering Moser Tower since 2000, Century Walk public art since 1996, the Riverwalk since 1981, Naper Settlement since 1969, and Centennial Beach since 1931, our city’s most prominent amenities were inspired by innovative local residents. All five attractions connect relevant history. Perhaps great minds with can-do spirit can create a cooperative plan for the City’s bicentennial in 2031.

What we also need in Naperville is a safe return to open…

Open Everything! Open Minds! Open Hearts!

Enjoy fun in the sun, sand and shade at Centennial Beach, open daily, weather permitting, until Aug. 17. Then The Beach is open certain hours until Labor Day.

Follow local protocols, wash hands, but don’t wash away commonsense.

Watch for blue skies! Breathe a little fresh air every day.

Our past gives richness to our present.
