Journey with Autism – Be joyful in 2021

-

In this new incredibly-needed year, we sing “Auld Lang Syne,” the song to bid farewell to the old year.

This year helped make any other year front to back feel like a great one. Yet weddings came and babies were born. Girls bought dresses and staged home proms. Summer was lovely and fall even better. The skies were more blue without fossil fuel burning as much. Guys batted balls in an empty stadium with piped-in cheers. Golfers golfed and walkers walk. With the help of good weather we sat outside until late at night and listened to music under the stars.

Some of us struggled and hurt to our limits. Others gave help and healed those who suffered. We saw much more death, and slowed down our lives.

We voted, and did so in numbers quite stunning.

When this new year is over and life is back to whatever is our new normal, simple things like bigger gatherings and life in crowds returning, there will be many lives affected and hard and palpably troubling ways.

Should we ever endure more pandemics what we learned will be our guide. But more important is each of our takeaways from this ordeal.

My suffering was not catastrophic in nature and I am grateful beyond words. In years to come I’m thinking that in our memories, we will remember less of the bad and more of the making of lemonade in these lemon days. We will hopefully rebuild our communities, teach in person and maybe sit in stadiums to raise our cheers in real time.

We will hope for prosperity for those in need and may we never again take for granted hugs and handshakes, mask-less trips to the store and the joy of being close to those we love.
