Transitions – Serenity for the New Year

-

‘Tis the time that we often make resolutions for the New Year, so what kind of resolutions do we make for 2021?

The Serenity Prayer expresses how we should approach 2021. Written by Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, the prayer is often shared and is included in 12-step programs for addiction support groups. It’s brief and profound.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Here are a few other words of wisdom for 2021. “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorry – it empties today of its strength.”

And… “Thanksgiving is the antidote to worry.”

We are now more aware of what the world is going through because of 24-hour news – the fires, hurricanes, riots, politics and virus. Frankly, it’s not surprising how many people need a Serenity Prayer right now. The only question is will they take the time to embrace it?

Healing begins with the first step of recognizing the need for healing.  One of my favorite TV shows, Star Trek Discovery, expressed it well, “You can’t move forward if you pretend that everything is all right.”

The Serenity Prayer continues… “Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life…. Amen”

Indeed Amen – Peace be with you in 2021.
