Fire Prevention 24-7 – Welcome 2021 with open arms

-

It’s safe to say that 2020 was the most challenging year we’ve probably ever had in our lifetime. Even so, there were definitely some positives that came from it. Our day-to-day routines slowed down, and we were able to take a breath and be present. We all got to spend more quality time with our loved ones, which is one of my favorite things that came from it. And I don’t know about you, but even though we were in the midst of a global pandemic and stuck at home, the months FLEW by!

How was it working for the Fire Department during COVID-19? It was pretty amazing. I have a new-found respect and admiration for the people I work with. Some days I found myself feeling overly nervous about catching COVID. And it would take a chat with one of the firefighters, to calm my nerves. After all, they deal with infectious diseases daily, and handle it flawlessly. They had to adapt to this new normal, and still function at the high level they always have, and they didn’t skip a beat.

My professional world was definitely thrown for a loop. I am the Fire Safety lady (that’s what the kids call me). I spend most of my time in the schools, businesses and senior centers, teaching about fire and life safety. So, I was thinking, “What now?”

I still needed to deliver my messages, but had to find a new way. I watched lots of tutorials and webinars, and learned new software. I ended up turning all my in-person lessons into virtual ones. They were Google based and I created two different versions – one for the kids to do with the teacher, or one that they could do on their own, during their asynchronous time. While I was nervous waiting for their reaction, the feedback I received was so positive!

So, as I reflect on 2020, although challenging, I think it was pretty great. I learned new ways of doing things, and learned that we are all extremely resilient.

Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t wait for 2021, and hopefully a return to some sort of normalcy. We’ve come this far Naperville, and I finally feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Call your neighbors/senior relatives and check in on them, do something nice for yourselves and let’s welcome 2021 with open arms. We’ve got this!
