Celebrate the armed forces

-

I think everyone is looking for some reason to celebrate these days. I hope you’re able to celebrate the United States Navy birthday on October 13.

In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized that day as the official day for the recognition of the Navy birthday. Sailors all around the world will be celebrating the day.

In 1775, George Washington recognized the need to disrupt British supply lines during the Revolutionary War. He used his authority as commander in chief of the Army to convert a small number of fishing schooners into warships. This small Navy was able to capture 55 British ships during the war. By 1781 there were only two remaining warships. Luckily, the United States also had the support of French ships during the Revolutionary War. By 1785, the United States had little money and no longer needed to interrupt an enemy’s supply routes. The Navy was disbanded.

Pirates started attacking U.S. Merchant ships and sometimes imprisoned American sailors. To address this issue, Congress revived the Navy in 1794 and constructed six warships, including the USS CONSTITUTION.

During the War of 1812 that ship earned the nickname ”Old Ironsides” because supposedly opposing cannonballs bounced right off. Today old warship still is considered as part of the U.S. Naval fleet and is afloat in the Boston Harbor. You can go aboard and tour the ship.
Perhaps this year you’d like to join in on the celebration of the 245th birthday of the United States Navy. The big day is Tues., Oct. 13. Wish your friends “Fair Winds and Following Seas.”

If you are looking for other birthdays to recognize… The Army began June 14, 1775. The Coast Guard began Aug. 4, 1790. The youngest of the Armed Forces, the Air Force, began on Sept. 18, 1947, when it became a separate branch of the service and was no longer considered as part of the Army. The Marines began Nov. 10, 1775, and that day is celebrated by saying “Semper Fi,” a shortened version of their motto “Semper Fidelis, always Faithful.”

Join the fun and offer a toast to everyone serving our country today. Then at 11AM on November 11, you can toast and celebrate with all individuals who have served our military in past years, our Veterans.

Simply remember “11-11-11.” Peace.
