Get to know candidates, ballot issues in advance of voting Election Day 2020

-

Campaign buttons in PN’s collection dating back to the ERA Campaign in 1919 as well as Presidential Candidates Alf Landon in 1936 (Landon hailed from Kansas, the Sunflower State; thus the “felt” sunflower) and Wendell Willkie in 1940 are emblazoned with names of winners and losers. Both Landon and Willkie lost to FDR, the only U.S. President to be elected to four terms. Note the 22nd Amendment, passed by Congress March 21, 1947, when Harry Truman served as President, was ratified February 27, 1951. The 22nd Amendment limits terms of the President, saying that “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

Thanks for valuing history found in a small selection of our large collection of buttons!   —PN

Back in 1994, Congressman Harris Fawell held a Constitution Day event at Naper Settlement. Members of the community, all ages, were invited to “sign” a replica of the U.S. Constitution, a time to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. During festivities, folks visited the one-room Copenhagen Schoolhouse located at the outdoor history village where they received instruction about the historic document. Constitution Week is an annual time to get to know the Framers of the Constitution and how they met in Philadelphia to set our country on a bold course toward forming a more perfect Union that includes a process for amending the rule of law for our Nation.

Original Post, Sept. 16, 2020 / Our aim always has been to assist all eligible and registered voters with opportunities to get to know all the candidates running to serve Naperville. Follow the candidates during the campaign to listen and learn how they will represent you and why they might deserve your vote.

Certainly this year’s campaign season has been challenged with uncharted times for all hopefuls. Do research. Think beyond the election. Be alert to differences between facts and fiction. Be informed. Be sure your vote counts.

Visit candidate websites. View remote presentations and debates. Attend meet and greet events and fundraisers. Support candidates who follow your core values. Become educated way in advance of heading to the polls on Tues., Nov. 3, 2020. The PN Voters Guide will be updated with important voter information as it becomes available.

Thanks for reading. Also, if early voting by mail or absentee ballot, let us suggest postmarking your vote by October 26, 2020, to give the USPS time to deliver your vote in advance of Election Day.
