Claiming Your Future

-

Several years back, I was in middle school at an assembly. They brought in a speaker named Ron Garmon. He was a journalist that had begun traveling the United States, hoping to share his story.

Here’s what he told us: he was always an underachiever in school, skipping classes and spending time with the wrong crowd. He felt as if teachers didn’t support him and all his classmates saw him as dud.

His mother, however, firmly believed in his capacity for success and convinced him to take the SAT junior year. Several months pass and the SAT scores are given back to students and Ron gets a 1480 out of 1600. Absolutely blown away at the potential he didn’t know he possessed, Ron turned his life around with the hope that his future may not be so bleak.

And so he enters his senior year with a new outlook; he attends every class and pays attention, he cuts off his poor habits, and he starts thinking about his future.

While thinking, he decides that he enjoys writing and he’s pretty good at it. So, fresh out of high school, he finds his first job as a writer for a regional newspaper. Garmon works hard and over the years, he grows in wealth and reputation until he is finally satisfied.

That’s when we all thought the story ended.

A guy who was wicked smart and just needed a standardized test to unlock his potential. But the real lesson comes 12 years after he leaves high school. That’s when Mr. Garmon receives an email from the SAT board stating he was one of 18 students that were given the wrong SAT scores. His reported score was 1480, when in reality, he got a 740.
His potential wasn’t some illusive treasure that was unlocked by the SAT, but instead was brought into existence simply because he believed and was believed in.

So do with this story what you will, but I say next you want something, just believe you can do it and it’ll be yours.
