Supporting our communities

-

2020 has been one of the most hectic years in the past several decades. Australian wildfires, a global epidemic, and now the Black Lives Matter movement across the country.

We’ve been stuck in quarantine for months now just waiting for the world to calm down, and for many of us, we can’t help but feel as if our lives have been put in stall.

Instead of just waiting idly for our lives to return to normal, we can contribute to those in our community who are truly in need during this time of struggle. Supporting others could be donating to a food drive or maybe just buying groceries for those fearful of leaving their homes.

For my family, we would like to support young parents trying to find a balance between working from home and keeping their kids entertained. My mom is the leading kids’ pastor at the Community Christian Church Yellow Box location and, as result, she is given the opportunity to interact with entire families all over our community. In an attempt to provide kids with something to do, she has enlisted my whole family in the task of organizing and helping distribute small crafts for kids in our area. Each of these crafts will be associated with a lesson encouraging values like honesty and love and fairness. Although there are religious and specifically Christian undertones in these crafts, these virtues apply to everyone, regardless of race, religion or creed.

This project is one small way that my family is trying to promote a real community where we can support and take care of each other while keeping up our social distancing. Every day the global crisis takes another step toward improvement, but it may be some time before our lives begin to feel normal again. Before we settle back into our old routine, let’s help take care of those in need in our community.
