This month’s column was inspired by one of my readers who called last week asking for my opinion on the best timing for moving all family members? As a Naperville Realtor for nearly four decades, I have certainly experienced many families moving in and out of perhaps the busiest relocation town in Chicagoland. Though no one-size fits all in this topic. No doubt, moving a family across town or the country is not an easy task either way!
School Aged Children
If moving into a new area, it is generally agreed that it is better to move school aged children while school is in session rather than the traditional move during the summer break. If the move is made during the summer months, the kids most likely will have difficulty breaking into the peer groups. The classroom, however, permits an artificial environment where peers must spend certain time together each day. This gives the newcomer an opportunity to meet other students with similar interest before the break for the summer recess. As someone who never moved during my childhood, I always envied the “new kid” in my class!
Family Friends
It’s also easier for parents to meet other parents while school is in session. In fact, many adult friendships are made possible because of the friendships begun by children in school. Volunteer opportunities for various school projects and extracurricular activities also provide the occasions to meet other adults with similar interests.
Employed Spouse
Statistics tell us that a high number of relocating spouses are currently employed outside the home. Many moves are dependent upon the spouse finding suitable employment in the new location in order for the family to maintain its standard of living. It’s probably best to move at any time other than the holidays or during the summer because potential employers are usually more available for the interviews and able to make hiring decisions.
ADVICE: Regardless of age, it is wise to engage your children in the moving process so they can feel included and able to embrace the adventure that lies ahead. Your Realtor can also be of assistance in helping the relocating family put its roots down in a new community. He or she knows the area and can help you get the information you need.
