November Events at North Central College

Nov. 1, Exhibit: Now through Nov. 10, North Central College showcases “Inside Out, Outside In” by Donna Castellanos and sponsored by Pinot’s Palette in the Schoenherr Gallery in the Wentz Concert Hall & Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Explore a new thematic installation by Castellanos that brings the inside out, and the outside in. For each piece in this exhibition, everyday objects have evolved into new assemblages. Look closely and you’ll find denim jeans, antique books, old computer equipment, soccer balls and more, all transformed into a new light. Step inside and consider how these familiar objects have been turned inside out and outside in. Visitors are also invited to explore their own creativity in a community interactive area. By using vintage typewriters, guests may contribute memories, stories and insights into a shared collection of handmade books that become part of the exhibition. Gallery admission is free. Nov. 1, Transfer Info. Session: Transfer info sessions are for prospective transfer students interested in learning more about academic choices, transfer admission process, scholarships and financial aid. These sessions also offer students the opportunity for an unofficial transcript evaluation or an on-the-spot admission decision. Nov. 1, Concert: On Nov. 1 from 8—10PM, vibraphonist Brad Stirtz will be joined on stage by members of North Central’s jazz studies program. Stirtz is a jazz and percussion educator that has travelled the world performing. Currently, he works as the director of worship and music at Peace Lutheran Church and is a 30-year faculty member at the Birch Creek Percussion Camp in Wisconsin. This event is hosted at the Madden Theatre, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $22 for adults and $17 for seniors and students. Nov. 1, Concert: On Nov. 1 beginning at 7PM, soulful Syrian-American vocalist Bassel Almadani and ensemble will perform at Koten Chapel, 329 E. School St. Over 20 percent of their merchandise proceeds will be donated to humanitarian relief through the Karam Foundation. Tickets are $15 for an adult and free with a North Central College ID. Nov. 3, Exhibit: Throughout the month of November, North Central College’s Oesterle Library Gallery will host an exhibit entitled, “Exploration 2019.” The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8AM to 8PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 11AM to 7PM. This exhibit—located at 320 E. School St.—showcases works by Chicago Calligraphy Collective (CCC). Nov. 6, Concert: On Nov. 6 from 7–9PM. at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., violinist Vijay Gupta and composer Reena Esmail will perform the world premiere of Esmail’s Concerto for violin with the Neuqua Valley High School orchestra. Gupta, a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award and Esmail a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist, will also talk with the audience about their experiences as artists. Tickets range from $10-50. Nov. 8, Performing Arts: From Nov. 8—17, North Central College will host William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Friday performances will be from 7:30-10PM, and Sunday performances will be from 2-4:30 p.m. There will be two showings on Saturdays; the earlier performance runs 2-4:30PM, with evening performances running from 7:30-10PM. Nov. 9, Sporting Event: On Nov. 9, the North Central College football team will face off against Illinois Wesleyan University. The game will be hosted at the Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium beginning at 1PM. For more information, visit northcentralcardinals.com/schedule.

Nov. 9, Concert: On Nov. 9 from 8–10PM, the Chicago Sinfonietta presents “Love + Light: The Diwali Celebration Returns.” East meets West in this performance of Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3” and Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite,” in addition to an Indian dance performance. Dr. Lakshminarayana Subramaniam and guest conductor Sameer Patel, assistant conductor of the San Diego Symphony fuse the traditions of southern India with Western Classics. Tickets range from $10-62. Nov. 10, Concert: Under the leadership of Conductor and Music Director Ron Keller, the Naperville Municipal Band Fall Concert is set for 3PM, Sun., Nov. 10, at Wentz Concert Hall. Admission is free of charge. Doors open at 2:30PM. The Wentz Concert Hall is located in the North Central College Fine & Performing Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave.

Nov. 13, First-Generation Visit Day: First-generation visit days are for prospective first-generation college students, which are defined as neither parent having a four-year college degree. Students will meet with Cardinal First program mentors and learn how North Central will support them throughout their journey at the College. The program includes a presentation and lunch with current first-generation students. For more information and to register visit northcentralcollege.edu/visit.

Nov. 15, Exhibit: Throughout the month of November, North Central will host Zelene Schlosberg’s exhibit at its Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Drawing inspiration from the East and the West, ancient and contemporary, Schlosberg creates a provocative exhibit. Galley hours of operation include Monday and Saturday from 10AM to 6PM, and Tuesday-Friday from 10AM. to 9PM. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Nov. 15, Freshman Visit Day: High school students and their parents or guardians are invited to attend North Central College’s visit day in the Wentz Concert Hall lobby at the Fine & Performing Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Visitors can attend a morning session with check-in at 9:15AM. There are opportunities to take a walking tour and attend informative sessions on financial aid, academic highlights and student life, with optional tours of athletic and fine arts facilities. Nov. 15, Concert: On Nov. 15 from 8–10PM, enjoy “the next great voice on soprano saxophone” according to Cadence Magazine, in an evening with jazz saxophonist Mitch Paliga. He has recorded over 30 original compositions and arrangements in his career and is a founding member of the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective. Members of North Central’s jazz studies program will join Paliga on stage. This event costs $17 for seniors and students and $22 for adults. Nov. 16, Concert: On Nov. 16 from 7:30–9:30PM, internationally renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine joins the DuPage Symphony Orchestra (DSO) to perform “Remarkable Russians.” Incorporating musical elements from Armenia, the Ottoman Empire, Soviet Union and more, this performance is sure to leave audience members feeling exhilarated. Nov. 19, Concert: On Nov. 19 from noon to 1:30PM, North Central College Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir and student soloists will perform the “Woodwind Spectacular” at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. For more information, visit finearts.northcentralcollege.edu/event.

Nov. 20, Event: Barstool Politics will take place on Nov. 20, from 6:30–8PM, at the theatre in Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Professors William Muck, Tom Cavenagh, Suzanne Chod, Phil Barker and alumnus Nick McGuire ‘12 will host the live show discussing current political issues. Potential topics include the ongoing impeachment inquiry, foreign policy issues surrounding Syria and the Ukraine, Brexit, the state of the Trump presidency and major cases brought before the Supreme Court this term. Nov. 20, Event: On Nov. 20 beginning at 7PM, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will be signing her book “With All Due Respect: Defending America with Grit and Grace” at Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. This free event is hosted by Anderson’s Bookshop and open to the public. Haley will read from the book and discuss the most significant events of our time. Nov. 21, Concert: On Nov. 21 from 7:30–9:30PM, North Central College’s jazz studies program presents, “The Fall Great Evening Jazz.” They will be performing ensembles, including the jazz combos, big band and vocal jazz ensemble in Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Nov. 22, Concert: On Nov. 22 from 7:30–9:30PM, North Central College’s Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, Chamber Singers, Cardinal Chorus and guest instrumental musicians will collaborate in the “Explore the Sound Holiday Concert.” This event is hosted at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Nov. 22, Concert: On Nov. 22 beginning at 7PM, Country Americana group Maybe April will perform at Koten Chapel, 329 E. Nov. 23, Improv Comedy: On Nov. 23 from 8–9PM, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood perform an improv performance where the audience suggests original scenes, songs and more. Nov. 24, Event: On Nov. 24 beginning at 2PM, former first daughters Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush will be signing their first children’s book “Sisters First” at Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. This free event is hosted by Anderson’s Bookshop and open to the public. Hager and Bush will read from the book and discuss what it was like growing up together in the White House. Nov. 25, Concert: In their concert to wrap up the fall semester, North Central Concert Winds, Wind Orchestra and Chamber Singers will perform a wide-range of music including both standard literature and contemporary music.
