DuPage County Report

DuPage County Animal Services has joined forces with the Humane Society of the United States to offer its first ever Puppy Mill Workshop from 10AM to 2PM on Sunday, June 30, at the DuPage County Auditorium. This event is open to the general public and is free to attend. Advanced registration is required.

This event will cover key topics such as passing local, state, and county laws, building coalitions, conducting research, communicating with legislators, and representing the issue effectively in front of the media and general public. Attendees will learn all about puppy mills, kitten mills, pet store conditions, the mill-to-pet-store supply chain, humane pet store models, the impact of commercial breeding on rabbits, and the difference between preservationist breeders and pet stores. Guests will also hear from pet owners who learned the hard way about the damaging effects of commercial breeding through personal testimonials.

“Commercial breeders and traditional pet store owners profit handsomely while misleading consumers and contributing to the needless suffering of animals in puppy mills and catteries.” said Brian Krajewski, Chairman of the DuPage County Animal Services Committee. “A growing number of suburban municipalities, along with Cook County, the City of Chicago, and hundreds of other cities and counties across the nation recognize that there is no shortage of animals in need of homes and that businesses can be both successful and humane if they are willing to adapt.”

Krajewski continued, “Our goal is to educate, serve as a resource, and empower individuals to create change in their own communities so that Illinois can become the humane state we all know it can be.”

Presenters include: HSUS Illinois State Director, Marc Ayers; DuPage County Animal Services Committee Chair, Brian Krajewski; DuPage County States Attorney, Robert Berlin; Bailing Out Benji Founder, Mindi Callison; Owner/Proprietor of Dog Patch Pet and Feed, Greg Gordon; DuPage County Animal Services Veterinarian Administrator, Dr. Barbara Hanek; The Puppy Mill Project Founder, Cari Meyers; and many more.

More event details and information can be found at www.dupageco.org/animalservices/legislation. Guests can register for the event by visiting hsuspuppymillworkshop.bpt.me.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
