Senior Voices – Cherish and share fond memories

-

Since Easter came so late this year, I was reminded all during April that everyone has fond memories of a favorite Easter. I have at least two.

One of my favorite Easters was in Lima, Peru, when we were there touring on our own with another couple from Naperville. We were on our way to Machu Picchu. We didn’t understand much of what was said during the sermon (Spanish is the official language, while Quechua is the most popular indigenous language in Peru.), and that’s probably why it’s so memorable!

Another memory, years ago when we lived in Janesville, Wisconsin, is thanks to when I was the organist for the Presbyterian Church. The organ was in the front, and so was the choir. In front of the choir was a brass railing about 2½ feet up from the floor with a dark green curtain to shield the lower part of the choir. I played two services with an hour in between services.

At the first service a soloist performed. The full choir sang at the second service. The soloist and I would do the music at the beginning of the first service and discretely slip out the side choir door. Then we’d re-enter after the sermon and do the Offertory, Doxology and Postlude. That way, we didn’t have to sit in front and listen to two sermons.

It was customary for the soloist to bring donuts, which the two of us would enjoy with coffee while the first sermon was being given. However, this one Easter Sunday, after we’d exited the side door, the soloist remembered that he had left the sack of donuts by his seat in the choir. He said he’d “sneak back in and get them.”

So he cracked the side door and crawled on his hand and knees to the sack. He didn’t think anyone would see him behind the green curtain. He managed to get the sack of donuts. However, it was difficult to crawl with his choir robe around his knees and to turn around while holding the sack of donuts. Somehow he got caught in the green drape, which fell down from the brass railing.

Imagine the congregation seeing the soloist on his hands and knees in front holding a sack of donuts. That’s another Easter I will always remember.

Chuckle Time: Donut worry. Be happy. Enjoy the merry, merry month of May!
