27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Letter Carriers’ Food Drive Is May 11 nationwide

-

Above / Signs around town remind residents that the Naperville collection to Stamp Out Hunger hosted by National Association of Letter Carriers is Sat., May 11, 2019. Locally, the food drive will benefit families served by Loaves & Fishes Community Services.

The National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association will mobilize with the assistance of Loaves & Fishes Community Services during the 27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Each year, residents are encouraged to place healthy, unexpired, non-perishable items in bags by their mailboxes the morning of the second Saturday in May. For 2019, the collection by postal carriers, Loaves & Fishes volunteers and community members is set for Sat., May 11.

Karen Change, Postmaster of Naperville, stated that although the collection takes additional time and creates a longer work day, the letter carriers are entirely supportive.

“The Stamp Out Hunger initiative is in alignment with everything we do,” said Change. “We serve the community daily and know that there are people struggling to make ends meet in the neighborhoods we deliver to, so this is a way to further that service mission.”

Last year, more than 77,000 pounds of food was collected during the food drive in support of families that visit Loaves & Fishes for grocery assistance.

“We appreciate the National Association of Letter Carriers, the United States Postal Service, and the support of our entire community,” said Loaves & Fishes Community Services CEO Mike Havala. “Our clients especially need healthy food.  We are appreciative that people’s donations of healthy, non-perishable food help keep our shelves stocked during the summer months when kids are on summer break from school and there are more meals to provide at home.”

At the May 7, 2019, City Council Meeting Mayor Pro Tem Judy Brodhead recognized the collaborative efforts of the Letter Carriers to “Stamp Out Hunger” with Loaves & Fishes Community Services.

A Stamp Out Hunger kick-off event will take place at 9AM on Thursday, May 9 at the Naperville USPS at 1750 W. Ogden Avenue. Loaves & Fishes staff, USPS officials and Mayor Pro Tem Judy Brodhead will thank the letter carriers for their great efforts.

Editor’s Note / Orange “food collection” bags were distributed via USPS letter carriers on Wednesday. The bags also are available in the lobby at the Main Post Office on Ogden Avenue. According to Loaves & Fishes VP of Advancement Nancy Weirsum, healthful nonperishable items as well as personal care items for men and women are most needed. For instance, consider oatmeal, canned tuna and canned fruit as well as toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, feminine products, tissue, razors, shaving cream, moisturizer, to suggest a few.
