Things to do around Naperville this weekend: May 3-5

Water is way up over the banks at May Watts Pond on Friday, creating new places for waterfowl along the sidewalk that is impassible. Sidewalks to the footbridge are flooded, too. Still, big fish are jumping… some over the banks.

DuPage Veterans Foundation Honor Flight Fundraiser – 11AM -2PM | $30-40
DuPage Airport – 2700 International Dr. West Chicago, IL 60185
DuPage Veterans Foundation will host its 8th annual Honor Flight Fundraiser starting at 11AM Saturday, May 4, in the Calamos Hanger located at the at the DuPage County Airport. Advance tickets are $30 per person or $40 at the door. The Foundation’s fundraiser is scheduled for a display of incredible vintage war planes and other WWII era vehicles. The event starts with the presentation of the colors and a recognition of all of branches of the service. A catered buffet lunch with the Veterans is served at noon featuring Barb-B-Q and Italian food lines. This will be followed by a rousing patriotic program that includes NFD Highland Guard Bagpipers, Naperville Big Band plus a headline performance of popular and patriotic songs of the era. Mark your calendar for A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelters 26th Annual Makin Strides for Strays Walk-a-thon. Come out on May 5 to Naperville Central High School, 440 Aurora Ave., to join in a day of family fun that supports a great cause. The day consists of a 2.5 mile walk through downtown Naperville, music, vendors, food, and canine competitions. Furry family members are welcome.

24 Years of German Church Services – 11:30AM | Free

On Sunday, May 5, celebrate 24 years of church services in the German language in Naperville. The church service at 11:30AM at St. John United Church of Christ will be followed by a reception with cake and coffee. The service will be led by Pasotr Dr. Egon Gerdes, and all are welcome to attend. St. John UCC is located at 1190 Olesen Drive. German services are held on the first Sunday of every month and will continue on June 2 and July 7. For more information, call (630) 355-5208.

Mayor & City Council Take Oath of Office – 3PM | Free

On Sunday, May 5, the community is welcome to the swearing in of the City Council that will serve Naperville for the next four years. Recently re-elected are Mayor Steve Chirico, Councilman Paul Hinterlong and Councilwoman Patty Gustin as well as newcomers Patrick Kelly and Theresa Sullivan. Thanks to all who serve this community. The four incumbent City Council members are Judy Brodhead, Kevin Coyne, John Krummen and Benny White.
