Senior Voices: Post Office – Vote – Ben Franklin 284

-

Where have I been? How did this escape me? When did our postage go up in price? I have a big box of 8.5 x 11 white envelopes with my return address printed on it. In one envelope I put 1 ½ sheets of paper and addressed it to my tax accountant. (It is that time of year when you best get everything to your CPA for your taxes.) Imagine my surprise when it came back stating “Insufficient Postage”. And my one stamp had a mark on it. How could that cost two stamps? So begrudgingly I put on two stamps, thinking the post office had made an error.

Guess what, it came back again. I called the post office. Seems the Forever stamp used to be 50 cents and thankfully they raised it to 55 cents. So my two stamps now totaled $1.10. The post office stated the weight no doubt needed $1.15. So I was a nickel short. This time I put on 3 Forever stamps and I hope I won’t see that envelope again. I spent $1.65. Next time I will copy and fax the tax info to my CPA. Free!

BE SURE TO VOTE for our City officials. City elections are much more palatable than all the Chicago and National elections. Ben Franklin is quoted as saying: “If they will quit saying lies about me, I will quit saying the truth about them”.

It is so sad that not enough residents vote. We need the support of everyone. If you are fortunate enough to live in our wonderful City, please take an interest in helping run it. It is your duty!

Editor’s Note / As of Jan. 27, 2019, the First Class Mail Letter (1 oz.) rate for postage purchased at the Post Office or Oswald’s Pharmacy USPS increased by five cents from 50 cents to 55 cents. Each additional ounce for a First Class Mail letter now will cost 15 cents  (a decrease from 21 cents).  A booklet of 20 First Class Forever Stamps now will cost $11.
