March Editor’s Notes

-

This third month of the year welcomes many firsts – the first crocus, the first daffodil, the first earthworm and the first day of spring.

This month of the Full Worm Moon is also the time for all the Irish and Irish wannabees to celebrate the feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. The patron saint of Ireland was born in Britain about A.D. 385, and ever since 1993, the West Suburban Irish have been baking Irish soda bread, cooking up corned beef and cabbage, proudly wearing green and orange in their St. Patrick’s Parade, capping off a couple weeks of festivities that celebrate the legend of the missionary.

WSI Irish President Mike Reilly wants the community to know that the Irish Mass again is planned at St. Raphael Church in Naperville on the Wednesday before the parade, this year at 7PM on March 13.

The Irish Mass is a beautiful service featuring Irish hymns and instrumental music. A prelude of Irish music will be performed by Irish tenor Paddy Homan beginning at 6:30PM. Portions of the Mass will be in Irish Gaelic.

Irish Tribute to First Responders

“In the past, we have dedicated the Irish Mass to our local first responders from the police and fire departments,” said Reilly at the recent WSI Emerald Dinner. “This year we’re also dedicating the mass to include the first responders in Aurora.”

The Irish Mass is open to the public. The mass will followed at 8PM with an Irish Soda Bread Reception as well as a chance to meet the WSI 2019 Parade Queen and the 2019 Grand Marshall Christine Daly Jeffries. The McNulty Irish Dancers also will perform.

Vote right after spring break

Longtime readers know your PN editors are passionate about encouraging participation in this community, behind the scenes, out front and personal, and in any small or big way you wish.

So, of course, when we recently overheard two women walking along the Main Street in downtown Naperville wondering when the spring election was, we figured they weren’t longtime readers.

For nearly six months, we’ve been mentioning the Consolidated Election Campaign that includes Naperville Mayor and City Council, District 203 and District 204 School Board members, Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners and College of DuPage Board of Trustees.

Our PN website hosts Meet & Greet events as well as public forum listings that link to all the candidates’ websites. If you live in School District 203, you have 31 choices to get to know. If you live in School District 204, you have 30 choices.

We are grateful to all the candidates who have requested linking up to our website to help PN keep the community informed.

March continues to offer opportunities to meet and greet the candidates and/or attend public forums. Many of the recent forums are saved in archives where you can watch rebroadcasts. More than ever, local matters and so does your informed vote.

If you’re traveling for spring break, have a wonderful vacation.

Perhaps take PN with you to remind you that two days after spring break ends, it’ll be time to vote on Tues., April 2.

Think green with sunshine. Sláinte!

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
