Organizations offer scholarship opportunities for continuing education

AAUW Naperville Area Branch seeks 2019 scholarship applicants by March 15

AAUW Naperville Area Branch is now soliciting candidates for its 2019 Angeline Gale Scholarship. This scholarship is an award of $4,000 for women whose education has been interrupted and is funded by the annual AAUW Naperville Area Book & Media sale in June.

Requirements:

-Female, 26 years old or older
-Seeking undergraduate or associate’s degree
-Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
-Within 1 year of attaining associate’s degree or Junior status if working towards a Bachelor’s degree.
– Must reside in DuPage, Will, Kane, or Kendall county
-Can be PT or FT student, in a traditional or accelerated program. Maybe receiving financial aid.

2019 American Legion Post 43 Scholarship Award seeks applicants

The Naperville American Legion Post 43 currently is seeking applicants for its 2019 scholarship(s).  The annual award aims to assist a deserving young man or woman in pursuit of education after high school. This year’s award to a graduate of the class of 2019 (up to two) from an accredited Illinois high school a scholarship of up to $5,000 will be paid directly to any technical school or degree-granting college or university within the United States, upon confirmation of enrollment.

Eligibility

Resident of Illinois who is currently a senior in high school in the class of 2019 and

  • Child, stepchild or grandchild or great grandchild of a member of Naperville American Legion Post 43, Chapter 43 Legion Riders, or Sons of the Legion Squadron 43
  • Or currently a member of Boy Scout Troop 106, or The Ghostriders Sea Cadet VF-142 Squadron, or was a High School Oratorical Contest participant or attended Illinois Boys/Girls State under the sponsorship of Naperville American Legion Post 43
  • Or the child of a Naperville military veteran who, while a resident and on active duty, was killed or suffered a disability of 50 percent or more as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Selection Criteria

  • Academic achievement (GPA: high school transcript required)
  • Leadership and participation in school and/or community activities
  • Honors,
  • Community Service
  • Patriotic Involvement
  • Student essay describing the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society. The essay shall be the original work of the student.  Any other material must be footnoted.  The essay shall not be longer than three typed pages, and will be formatted with one-inch margins, 1.5 line spacing and 12-point font.
  • The grading of this essay will be based on grammar, spelling, originality, context and content at a level consistent with exceptional high school work. The essay may count up to 30 percent in selecting the winner.

Applying for the Award

Send all required material and supporting documentation to American Legion Post #43, P.O. Box 4, Naperville, IL 60566, Attention: Scholarship Committee. Please include your name, address, phone number & email address for contact information.  Applications must be received by March 27, 2019.

The decision of the Scholarship Committee Judges is final and all applicants will receive written notification that a decision has been reached. The winner will be notified by telephone and presentation of this award will take place on the evening of April 20, 2019 at the American Legion Awards and Recognition Banquet.

Scholarship designed for students interested in environmental fields 

 
The Conservation Foundation has released news about a scholarship opportunity to earn some financial support for a college education.  Applications must be postmarked by March 22, 2019.
 
The Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship is designed for students from DuPage, Kane, Kendall or Will County pursuing a major in the environmental fields.  Applicants must be a volunteer or associated with The Conservation Foundation and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.   
 
This scholarship was generously established by the D. “Dewey” and Leslie Pierotti family in memory of their late son Paul, who had a great love of the outdoors, especially the forest preserves of DuPage County.

DuPage County announces 2019 Scholarship Program

Wheaton – The DuPage County Department of Community Services is offering college and occupational training scholarships for low-income individuals with high academic potential. 

The Community Services Block Grant scholarship supplements the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and other school-related items for a semester or a quarter to offset the student’s needs. This scholarship is funded and designed in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. 

Applicants (high school graduates or enrolled in college) are required to provide proof of DuPage County residency, gross household income for the past 90 days and information about members living in the household. Income for the household must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level. Applicants must also include a 500-word original essay or personal statement, official school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a Financial Aid Audit (financial aid award letter) and proof of enrollment in an Illinois accredited institution.

Scholarship award ranges from $500 to $2,500 

The scholarship award amounts will vary this year from $500 to $2,500, and special consideration is given to students interested in high-technology fields or other occupations in emerging fields. 

Applications are available at the DuPage County Department of Community Services Office, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, or online at www.dupageco.org/CSBG. Completed applications and support documents must be received by the deadline at 4:30PM Friday, May 3.

High school seniors can apply for NJWC ‘2019 Michelle LaFrey Fregoso Scholarship’

Naperville Junior Woman’s Club (NJWC) is currently accepting applications for 2019 scholarships to award three $1,500 scholarships to graduating seniors who reside within Naperville School District #203 or Indian Prairie School District #204. Seniors graduating from high schools not included in Districts 203 & 204 qualify as long as they currently live within either district’s boundaries.

The Naperville Junior Woman’s Club has renamed the Scholarship Award to honor our late member, Michelle LaFrey Fregoso, who passed away last May. Michelle was a long standing member of NJWC, as well as the Director of Communications for Naperville School District 203. Because of her passion for both, NJWC proudly renames this award in her honor.

Scholarships will be awarded based on community service, school involvement, scholastic achievement and financial need. The application can be downloaded from our website:

For years NMB Conductor Ron Keller has welcomed high school students to perform with the big brass band during the holidays. Now he welcomes high school seniors to apply for his music education scholarship.

College-bound music education students can apply for ‘Ron Keller Music Scholarship’

Applications are now being accepted for the 2nd Annual Ronald Keller Music Scholarship in the amount of a one-time grant of $2,500. The scholarship will be awarded to a band student who plans to study music education.  

Naperville’s music man, Dr. Ron Keller, has shared his love of music with the community for more than 68 years. For the second year, the director of the Naperville Municipal Band will present eligible high school seniors aiming to be music education majors with a chance to apply for a scholarship to assist their college funds.

Applications are now available in the music departments of high schools that serve Naperville students.

Students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply:

  •      Graduating Senior
  •      Naperville resident
  •      Active musician in a Naperville area high school band
  •      Music Education Major  

The application form is now available via music department chairmen at Naperville high schools.  The submission deadline is March 15, 2019.

The award is expected to be presented at the Naperville Municipal Band (NMB) summer concert on Thursday, June 6, 2019, the first in the 11-week summer concert series in Central Park.
