20150104_First-Snow-Storm-2015_3529UPDATE, Jan. 24, 2019 / The City of Naperville reminds residents to take precautions to ensure their health, safety and well-being during the upcoming period of excessively cold weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the Naperville area from 6 p.m. tonight, Jan. 24, through noon on Friday, Jan. 25. Wind chills between -20 and -30F are expected overnight into Friday morning; with these conditions, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Current forecasts call for excessively cold temperatures to continue throughout the next week.

Good advice when it’s freezing doesn’t change too much…

Originally posted January 2015 / With a Winter Weather Advisory in effect, the City of Naperville reminds residents to make preparations to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

Residents are encouraged to visit the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov for current weather forecasts or their preferred media outlet.

During winter operations, residents can get regular updates about street plowing via an interactive map available at www.naperville.il.us/snowremoval.aspx. This map will show the progress of snow removal efforts throughout a winter storm. When snow events occur, the City’s Snow Command Center will provide information to residents and businesses via a new Winter Operations snow blog, available to view at http://napersnowcommand.wordpress.com/. Information, when practical, will also be provided via Naper Notify and the City’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The City requests residents assist during a winter weather event by moving their cars off the street until snow removal is complete. Please also shovel snow from driveways onto the parkway and not into the street. This will help to prevent dangerously slippery conditions for both motorists and pedestrians. Shoveling snow into the street is a City code violation.

Residents are responsible for clearing their sidewalks of snow and ice while business owners/tenants are responsible for taking whatever means necessary to ensure snow and ice from icicles and awnings do not pose safety hazards for those walking on sidewalks. Residents are also asked to ensure that sump pump discharge hoses are placed in a position where they do not drain over a sidewalk and into the street or adjoining properties, thereby creating dangerous ice build-ups.

Tips to stay safe during inclement winter weather:

  • Have safe emergency heating equipment available.
  • Have disaster supplies, such as a flashlight, portable radio, first aid kit and three-day supply of food, available in case the power goes out.
  • Make sure you have an appropriate supply of any medications you may need.
  • Stay indoors and dress warmly. Wear hats, scarves, and mittens or gloves.
  • Conserve fuel.
  • Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Wear proper clothing, including dressing in layers of loose-fitting clothing.
  • Make sure body parts most often affected by frostbite are covered in warm, dry clothing. These include your nose, ears, toes, cheeks, chin, and fingers.
  • Bring your pets indoors.
  • Try to stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Check on the elderly, those with illnesses, and others who may need special attention during this time.

If pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers of newspapers and wrap pipes in rags. Completely open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes, starting where they were most exposed to the cold.

If you must go outdoors, dress warmly and wear loose-fitting, layered, lightweight clothing. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

Remember to help your neighbors who may require special assistance – infants, those with chronic illnesses, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Limit outdoor exposure for your pets. Check frequently on any animal while they are outside.

A full list of tips can be found in the City’s Emergency Preparedness Guide, which is available at www.naperville.il.us/emergencyprepguide.aspx. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has also developed a preparedness document that includes valuable information about how to prepare a winter storm survival car kit and driving safety tips.
