Real Estate Logic – What Role Should Emotions Play?

-

When making a home-buying decision, there are many factors to consider. Some of the more obvious things include the location of the property and your particular housing needs. Unlike all other major financial decisions, emotions are also an important element when choosing your next home.

You are not just looking for a return on your investment. You are also selecting your future daily living environment. Your emotional sense of well-being is certainly affected by your immediate environment. Is this a home that you will look forward to coming home to every day?

Does the house or the possibility of what it may become excite you? When you walk in the door, do you get the feeling that you would like to live there? This is not trivial stuff we are discussing here. It is very important. So important, that I don’t believe you should buy a home that doesn’t appeal to you from an emotional point of view. The financial costs and other burdens of owning and maintaining a home become much more acceptable when you love your home.

No one else can tell you which home is best for you. You either feel it or you don’t. Parents or well-meaning friends can’t tell you which home to choose. The final decision is up to you.

Listening to your emotions, however, does not mean that you should buy a two bedroom home if you really can’t live with less than three bedrooms. Don’t fall in love with a home that is obviously out of your price range or in an area that is impractical for your daily living. It is really best to look at home that are affordable and in acceptable locations or you may flip over a home that could be an imprudent buying decision for you.

ADVICE: Even with the many Internet sites in today’s world, the best way to find out about homes in your area and price range is to use the services of a competent Realtor® who belongs to the multiple listing service that covers the area you want. After seeing a list of available homes, you can chose which homes to visit in person. You will know when you have the right home for you. You will feel it.
