Naperville Chamber will address opioid use in workplace

-

Above / The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce is located on the third level of Main Street Promenade in downtown Naperville. Its monthly membership luncheon for July will be held at the Hilton in Lisle.

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce will host its general membership monthly luncheon from 11:30AM to 1PM Mon., July 23, at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville, 3003 Corporate West Drive in Lisle.

The public is welcome with advance registration.

The topic will focus on “Opioid Use in the Workplace: The Proactive Role Employers Can Take.”

A recent study by the National Safety Council found that prescription drug abuse currently affects 80 percent of companies and that American employers are losing $10 billion per year from absenteeism and lost productivity due to opioid abuse.  This growing epidemic is affecting organizations of all sizes and in all industries.

How can you take a proactive approach?

This month’s panel of guests will discuss strategies that employers, managers or co-workers can take to be proactive and effective as a business.  Some of those strategies include:

     – Having clear policies and procedures in place that address the use of prescription drugs at work

     – Conducting pre-employment and random drug tests (including opioid screens) which serves as an excellent strategy for detecting and deterring drug abuse in the workplace

     – Providing education and training to supervisors and employees to help them spot addiction and give them the tools to respond effectively

     – Is an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) right for your organization?

Registration is online at naperville.net

For more information on the monthly General Membership Luncheons (RSVP: $25 for members/$45 for guests) and sponsorships, contact Beth Ann DiFranco at (630) 544-3365.

Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti

July 16, 2018 / I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss Lt. Governor (Evelyn) Sanguinetti’s op-ed in The Southern on how Illinois is combating the opioid epidemic. As co-chair of the Governor’s Opioid Prevention and Intervention Task Force, she sees the devastating effects of addiction first-hand and is committed to working with local communities to win this fight.

Read the full op-ed here

Today, more Americans die from drug overdoses than breast cancer. In 2016, more than 2,100 Illinois residents died from opioid overdoses, twice the number killed in car accidents. We can’t just sit back and allow this epidemic to continue claiming lives. Illinois is taking action.

Our group’s mission: reduce opioid overdose deaths by one-third over three years in Illinois.

…We know that we cannot arrest and incarcerate our way out of this. While those who are exploiting addiction for monetary gain deserve to be held accountable, those who are suffering from addiction need our compassion and need treatment to rehabilitate their lives. These services will help reduce the risk of relapse and recidivism.

…With smart, serious solutions, we can end this horrifying epidemic. We have taken necessary and decisive action to address the crisis. Even in these most partisan times, Republicans and Democrats can find common ground on this critical issue.

We are continuing to conduct roundtable discussions, tour treatment centers, and listen to members of our communities to do more every day to prevent abuse and help those in need.

Melissa Deatsch, Press Assistant, for the Governor of Illinois
