Being hungry is no picnic

-

Here we are in the middle of the summer. For most people, this is a time to get together with friends and family – perhaps at backyard cookouts or at some of the fantastic restaurants that we have in our area.

For many families, however, the summer brings on additional worry. When their children are out of school in the summer, without access to school lunch, struggling parents have to find a way to provide even more food to adequately feed their children. In DuPage County alone, there are over 162,000 people that live under the poverty line and low-income threshold. This local need is compounded in the summer time.

Last summer, Loaves & Fishes was able to provide food to over 3,000 children. This is only accomplished through the support of our community – people like you. We thank you.

And importantly, our focus is not just on providing food, but providing healthy food to ensure that children have proper nutrition that they need to grow. Furthermore, our Loaves & Fishes CARES Programs also provide many services that transform lives by helping families become more self-sufficient.

And while we were encouraged by the way people stepped up to help last summer, this year there is still a significant need for people in our community to help. We can make a difference for these children right now, through support that allows Loaves & Fishes to offer healthy foods including milk and eggs for the children of our community. This translates into allowing families to remember this summer with positive memories rather than as a time of struggle and worry.

In the summer, hunger doesn’t take a vacation. In fact, for many families, hunger is summertime’s uninvited guest.
