Fire Department battles structure fire on Greenwood Circle

-

At 4:10 PM on Wednesday, May 9, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a resident in the 700 block of Greenwood Circle, reporting a dryer fire at the residence. PSAP immediately dispatched a full still alarm for the appliance fire which brought a total of two engines, one ladder truck, one ambulance, one rescue vehicle, one incident commander and one safety officer to the scene (14 Personnel).

The first arriving Fire units identified a three story multi-family complex with smoke showing. Incident command was established and the investigation of the home confirmed a working fire inside the home. The alarm was upgraded to a general alarm response for the working structure fire bringing an additional engine company, truck company, squad company and medic company (11 additional personnel, 25 total personnel to the scene). A hose line was deployed to the second floor and a primary search of the residence was initiated. The resident confirmed that all family members had evacuated the home.

Additional fire companies began to evacuate the other units within the multifamily complex. Fire attack crews located the fire within the second-floor laundry room. Additional crews assisted with establishing a water supply, removing smoke by ventilating and searching for any hidden fire. Salvage and overhaul activities were conducted to limit further damage to property and contents of the home.

Additional assistance was provided by Naperville police, Naperville Transportation Engineering Development (TED), and The American Red Cross. The involved unit and unit below were declared uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage which displaced two families. The remaining units were determined to be habitable.

Naperville fire station coverage was provided by the Winfield, Wheaton, Downers Grove and Plainfield fire departments.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Naperville Fire Investigation Team.
