Fire Department responds to hazardous material call on Huntleigh Drive

-

On Wednesday, May 9 at 11:35AM, the Naperville Fire Department responded to the 1000 block of Huntleigh Dr. for an unknown hazardous material. The resident had located a package in the basement of his home with a label indicating Uranium.

The resident was unsure how to properly dispose of the materials and contacted several outside organizations to dispose of the small package. The Naperville Fire Department, once notified, responded a hazardous materials box alarm bringing an engine, squad, truck and ambulance to the scene along with our hazardous materials team and hazardous materials trailer. The alarm also brought additional outside hazardous materials resources as a precautionary measure.

The Hazardous Materials Team made entry into the residence with the appropriate level protection to identify the product. Extensive monitoring of the product and area determined that the readings were at the normal range. Family members were also monitored with no elevated readings and no complaints. The product will be collected by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IMEA) who responded to the scene. It is important to know that the response by the fire department was a precautionary measure and there is no identified risk to the community.

The Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm) 16 hazardous materials team, the Naperville Police Department and The Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Naperville fire station coverage was provided by the Bolingbrook and Plainfield Fire Departments.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.
