Firefighters battle structure fire on Fairway Drive

-

At 3:36 PM on Wednesday, May 2, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a resident on the 30W600 Block of Fairway Dr. reporting that she returned home to find smoke inside of her residence. PSAP immediately dispatched a full still alarm for the inside smoke investigation which brought a total of two engines, one ladder truck, one ambulance, one rescue vehicle, one incident commander and one safety officer to the scene (14 Personnel).

Engine 4 arrived on the scene within six minutes and identified a two story multi-family complex with nothing showing from three sides, possible odor of wood burning. Incident command was established by engine 4 and the investigation of the home confirmed a working fire inside the townhome. The alarm was upgraded to a general alarm response for the working structure fire bringing an additional engine company, truck company, squad company and medic company (11 additional personnel, 25 total personnel to the scene). A hose line was deployed to the second floor and a primary search of the residence was initiated. The resident confirmed that no family members were home at the time of the fire.

Additional crews began to evacuate the five other units within the multifamily complex. Fire attack crews located the fire within the second-floor bathroom and extinguished the fire within 25 minutes of arrival. Additional crews assisted with establishing a water supply, removing smoke by ventilating and searching for any hidden fire. Salvage and overhaul activities were conducted to limit further damage to property and contents of the home.

Additional assistance was provided by The DuPage County Buildings and Zoning Department, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, ComEd, NiCor and The American Red Cross. The involved unit was declared uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage which displaced three adults and two children. The remaining five units were determined to be safe.

Naperville fire station coverage was provided by the Winfield, Lisle, Westmont, Downers Grove and Plainfield fire departments.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Naperville Fire Investigation Team.
