-

Naperville PoliceNAPERVILLE, Ill. — The Naperville Police today announced it issued 348 distracted driving citations last month during specialized enforcement campaigns associated with Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The increased enforcement was part of state-wide efforts to reduce easily-preventable crashes caused by distractions, such as texting or talking on a cell phone.

“Driver distraction is a persistent issue in Naperville and often has life-altering consequences,” said Sgt. Derek Zook. “We implemented this enforcement action to encourage motorists to drop it and drive.”

The majority of the citations – 221 of them – were issued during the Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week campaign the week of April 23.

The remainder were issued during as part of the Illinois Drop It and Drive program from April 16 to 30.

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over, but the Naperville Police Department will continue working to stop residents from engaging in this deadly behavior,” said Sgt. Zook.

The Illinois Drop It and Drive program is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The second annual Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week was a coordinated effort between the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP), AAA, the Illinois State Police, IDOT, IHSCDEA and nearly 300 local law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois.

Report submitted by Commander Louis Cammiso for the Naperville Police Department.
