Art Talk – Voices of a new generation

-

Ask Neveen Michael, president of the Young Naperville Singers (YNS), “What’s new?” and prepare yourself for an animated rundown of exciting activities on tap for the nonprofit organization.

Right now YNS is gearing up for its Spring Concert program scheduled for Sun., May 6, at North Central College’s Wentz Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Three distinct performances are planned to be presented at 1:30PM, 4PM, and 6:30PM. YNS prides itself on training its performers in a way that allows for exuberance as well as advancement of their vocal skills. Audience members are the recipients of the joyful voices and can appreciate the dedication of the directors and the talent of the children.

Now in its 35th year, YNS offers nine ability-based choirs comprising over 350 boys and girls from 17 local communities in ages ranging from five to eighteen. Following the launching of Brio, a training boys’ choir in the fall of 2017, Bella Cantare, a tenth choir created for the most advanced girls, will be added in the coming season.

“Enjoyment plays an integral role in the development of good character and vocal excellence, and we seek opportunities to foster lifelong friendships within the organization,” Michael stated. “Simply put, each Young Naperville Singers’ rehearsal or event is as much about fun as it is about honing our singers’ vocal and performance skills.”

The good news continues. After an extensive search, Matthew Chicola, the former vice president of advancement at Loaves and Fishes, was welcomed as the new executive director. Selected for his passion and deep knowledge of Naperville nonprofits, Matthew’s experience will enable him to further promote YNS’s vision and mission of delivering “the highest level of artistic excellence in choral music through extraordinary educational and performance experiences that enrich the lives of young people.”

And its performances enrich the lives of the community members, as well. Music lovers look forward to winter and spring concerts each year along with bonus concerts at various local events including Ribfest, KidsMatter Awards Ceremony, and Christkindlemarket Naperville.

The young singers have won over fans both nationally and internationally. On their most recent tour, they sang to a standing-room-only crowd in Nitra, Slovakia, Naperville’s Sister City. At the end of the concert, the mayor of Nitra along with the other attendees responded in a standing ovation, a universal sign of approval for the young voices that were heard around the world.
