April Editor’s Notes

-

OK. Where do we begin with folklore to enjoy the month that begins with foolishness and the promise of showers for May flowers?

When you consider the ever-increasing difficulty to distinguish facts from fiction in the fast-paced daily electronic news, perhaps those soundbites—too often with misinformation and other distractions—also have shortened our attention spans to fool us all.

That said, bear with our printed pages as we aim to elicit a few smiles with our ever wonders as days grow longer and many readers catch spring fever.

When City Carillonneur Tim Sleep sent updates for the 2018 carillon concert schedule for April, featured at www.positivelynaperville.com, we remembered when folks joked with high hopes that Taco Bell would buy naming rights for the tower that holds one of the biggest musical instruments in the world.

Yet, it’s no joke that Loyola-Chicago Basketball Coach Porter Moser hails from Naperville and he’s the nephew of Margaret and Harold Moser, the couple after whom the 158-ft. tower with the 72-bell carillon is named. (Did you hear the bells toll on Loyola’s Road to the Final Four?)

We also recall an April prankster about 15 years ago who posted on PN’s website a calendar entry for April 1 to promote a benefit concert for Moser Tower, featuring Hootie and the Blow Fish drummer Jim Sonefeld, another Naperville native.

Moving right along… This April abounds with springtime events from Easter and Passover to Arbor Day and Earth Week, all celebrating the season’s renewal of life.

In addition to Easter’s being on April 1 for the first time in 62 years and Valentine’s Day on Ash Wednesday for the first time in 73 years, someone might wonder what’s happening for the very first and last time this month on Friday the 13th. We can tell you: Spring for a Cure, a Red Tie Event, in the Pavilion at Meson Sabika.

Other spring events sure to make a difference include the Naperville Chef Showdown to benefit Loaves & Fishes Community Services on April 11, the KidsMatter Tribute & Ignite the Night at Hotel Arista on April 14, the 7th Annual Derby Party for Hesed House on May 5, and the DuPage Veterans Foundation Honor Flight Fundraiser Lunch in the Calamos Investments Hangar at the DuPage Airport also on May 5. (Check Fun & Fundraising, page 24.)

And remember to let local wildlife be wild… Mayor Emeritus Pradel said Mary Lou Wehrli reminded him to watch and listen for Sandhill Cranes. Known to fly way high overhead, the extremely large flocks honk boisterous “bugle” calls for lucky observers to experience one of the noisiest wildlife migrations in the world.

Stroll the Riverwalk where we’ve observed ducks, geese, great blue heron and many other birds as well as beaver, rabbits, coyotes, raccoons, squirrels, snakes, frogs, toads, an American Dagger Moth Caterpillar and a few jumpin’ fish.

Good nature reminds us to pay attention, listen and watch. Be prepared to avoid aggressive geese protecting their nests. Develop a nose for authentic news that rings true without the smell of being skunked.

Take time to fish or teach a child to fish. Anglers say fish are particularly easy to catch in cool water this time of year, perhaps like pranking gullible fools in April.
