Last month I tried to ease the minds of parents that might be sending their son or daughter off to major in music at the college level. Well, this month I’m here to tell you that the road is getting even smoother for those choosing music education as a major, thanks to the new Ronald Keller Music Scholarship.
An annual scholarship amount of $2,500 will be awarded to a band student who plans to study music education. The first recipient will be presented with the award at a NMB concert on Thursday, June 14, 2018.
Dr. Ron Keller began playing with the Naperville Municipal Band (NMB) in 1953, and has been their conductor since 1965. His passion for music is something that has nurtured the Naperville community for decades, and this is just one more way that Dr. Keller’s legacy will continue to inspire.
For myself, this is a gesture that touches me very deeply. I really do believe that musicians are constantly changing lives and shaping our world by being the most prominent creators of culture. Music can dictate and convey human emotion across so many borders of all kinds. Teaching people how to speak to others through music is one of the most honorable things anyone can do in my eyes. To have a scholarship that recognizes a young student’s passion to educate is something very special.
In fact, anything that encourages young artists to pursue their dreams is pretty great in my book.
